Garganta de Geibikei

The boat ride operates in all seasons, creating dramatically different atmospheres. Summer is lush and green; autumn (late October) brings fiery foliage reflected in the water; winter sees occasional snow-covered cliffs and boatmen singing in freezing conditions. Spring (April–May) has fresh green growth. The boatmen's songs are the highlight — listen to the echoes bounce between the cliffs. Photography is encouraged. Sit near the front for unobstructed views. At the upstream landing, try the undama nage ritual (¥100 for 5 clay balls) — throwing them into a crevice in the rock supposedly brings good luck. The carp feeding is popular with children. The return journey downstream is faster and the boatmen often sing different songs. Combine Geibikei with Genbikei Gorge (30km south, near Ichinoseki) for a 'two gorges' day trip — they're completely different experiences (Geibikei is boat ride, Genbikei is walking path). Geibikei means 'strict beauty gorge' while Genbikei means 'mysterious beauty gorge.' The gorge is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty. Bring layers — the gorge is cool even in summer due to shade and water reflection.
