Nagatoro (長瀞) sits where the Arakawa River cuts through a crystalline limestone gorge, creating Class II–III rapids over exposed rock formations. The traditional river activity is line-rafting (ライン下り) — wooden boats piloted by skilled boatmen using long poles to navigate rapids and standing waves. The 6-kilometer, 20-minute ride combines gentle drifting past layered rock cliffs with sudden drops and splashing rapids that soak passengers.

The exposed rock formations — designated a National Natural Monument — show millions of years of geological history in tilted sedimentary layers called the 'Nagatoro Schist Belt'. The combination of whitewater excitement and geological spectacle makes Nagatoro Tokyo's closest authentic river-rafting destination. Peak season (spring snowmelt and post-typhoon autumn) brings higher water and more aggressive rapids; summer offers tamer family-friendly conditions.

Guía privilegiada

Premium
**Course selection:** Two courses are offered. Course A (3km, 20 min) covers the upper section with gentler rapids — suitable for young children and those seeking mild excitement. Course B (6km, 40 min) includes Course A plus the lower section with larger rapids and the most dramatic rock formations. First-timers should choose Course B if comfort with water splashing — the full experience justifies the extra ¥1,300. Course B departs from Oyahana Bridge; Course A from Nagatoro Station. **Water level timing:** Spring (April–May) brings snowmelt from Chichibu mountains — highest water levels and most aggressive rapids. This is when experienced rafters visit. Summer (July–August) has lower, warmer water — family-friendly but less thrilling. Autumn (October–November) water levels vary by rainfall; check the rafting company website for current conditions. Winter is closed due to cold and low water. **Getting wet:** You WILL get splashed — waterproof bags provided for belongings but expect clothes to get damp. Dress in quick-dry fabrics; avoid cotton. Change of clothes recommended (coin lockers at station, ¥300). The boats have no motors — boatmen use traditional pole techniques learned over years. Tipping is not expected but appreciated for exceptional skill (¥500 discreetly handed at end). **Rock formation viewing:** After rafting, walk the riverside Iwadatami (岩畳, 'rock tatami mat') — a 500-meter exposed limestone shelf where you can walk on the tilted sedimentary layers. The layered rock creates natural steps and platforms above the river. Geologists study these formations; casual visitors simply enjoy the alien landscape. Accessible year-round for free along the eastern riverbank.
