Mt. Hodo (宝登山, 497m) rises steeply above Nagatoro town, its summit accessible by a 5-minute ropeway ride that climbs 320 vertical meters through forests of maple and cedar. The summit hosts Hodosan Shrine — a branch of the main shrine at the mountain base, dedicated to fire prevention and established in 110 CE according to shrine records. The mountaintop shrine offers 360° views over the Chichibu Basin, Arakawa River valley, and surrounding mountain ranges.

The summit area includes plum groves (1,500 trees, blooming February–March), azalea gardens (blooming May), and hiking trails leading deeper into the Chichibu mountains. The ropeway upper station features an observation deck and small zoo (Japanese monkeys and small deer). The combination of shrine visit, panoramic views, and seasonal flowers makes Hodosan a natural complement to Nagatoro river activities.

Seasonal timing: The mountain transforms seasonally. Plum blossoms (February 15–March 15) bring pink and white flowers covering the hillside — among Kanto's earliest spring blooms. Azaleas (late April–May) create red and pink carpets. Autumn foliage (November 10–30) turns the maple forests brilliant red. Winter (December–January) often sees snow on summit — dramatic views but cold (bring layers).

Hiking option: The paved trail from base to summit takes 60–90 minutes (2.5km, 400m elevation gain). The trail passes through the main Hodosan Shrine complex at the base (worth a detour for the elaborate carvings and ancient trees). Hiking up and riding ropeway down saves ¥500 (one-way ticket ¥500). The trail is moderately steep but well-maintained with rest benches every 10 minutes.

Summit shrine rituals: The mountaintop shrine sells omamori (amulets) specific to fire prevention — traditionally purchased by restaurant owners and firemen. The shrine's origin legend involves a mythical wolf (ookami) guiding the shrine founder away from fire — wolf imagery appears throughout. The small shrine hall requires removing shoes for interior viewing (free entry).

Photography spots: The best panoramic view is from the western observation deck — unobstructed 180° vista over Chichibu Basin. Late afternoon (15:00–17:00) provides warm light on distant mountains. Clear days (check weather forecast) allow views extending 50+ kilometers. Hazy summer days limit visibility; crisp autumn/winter days offer best clarity.
