The Naruto Strait between Awaji Island and Shikoku creates the world's largest tidal whirlpools (鳴門の渦潮, Naruto no Uzushio) — underwater vortices up to 20 meters in diameter form when Osaka Bay and the Pacific Ocean exchange water through the narrow channel. The speed differential (up to 20km/h) causes spiral currents visible from observation platforms and tour boats.

The whirlpools appear during peak tidal flow (spring tides, twice monthly) when water volume is highest. Viewing from the Uzushio Cruise boat (渦潮クルーズ) allows close approach — boats navigate to within meters of active vortices, circling as whirlpools churn the sea surface. The Onaruto Bridge's glass-floor walkway (渦の道) provides aerial views 45 meters above the strait.

Guía privilegiada

Premium
**Tidal timing critical:** Whirlpools only form during peak tidal exchange — approximately 2-hour windows twice daily (times vary daily with lunar cycle). The tourist office and websites publish whirlpool forecasts (渦潮予報) rating intensity 1–5 stars. Only visit on 3+ star days, during the predicted 2-hour peak window, to see impressive vortices. Off-peak times show only minor currents — disappointing after the journey. **Cruise vs walkway:** Uzushio Cruise (boat) provides thrilling proximity — circling active whirlpools from 5–10 meters, feeling the boat tilt as currents pull. The walkway (Uzu-no-Michi) offers aerial perspective and glass floor panels showing the strait 45m below. The cruise is more dramatic and worth prioritizing; the walkway is supplementary if time allows. Combo tickets (¥2,400) offer slight savings. **Spring tide scheduling:** The largest whirlpools occur during spring tides (大潮, oooshio) — 3–4 day periods around new and full moon when tidal range is greatest. Check moon calendars and plan Awaji Island visit during these windows. Spring tide whirlpools can reach 20m diameter and create audible roaring; neap tide (小潮) vortices are much smaller and less impressive. This natural phenomenon rewards timing over spontaneity.
