Owakudani Valley

**Volcanic gas safety:** Owakudani emits hydrogen sulfide (H2S, rotten egg smell) and sulfur dioxide (SO2). The gases are generally safe at current levels but can irritate eyes/throat. People with asthma, respiratory conditions, or heart disease are advised to avoid the area. Signs indicate current gas levels; if 'Level 2' or higher is posted, access may be restricted to observation deck only (no valley floor trail). The smell is overwhelming initially but nose adapts after 5 minutes. Windy days disperse fumes (more comfortable); still days concentrate gas (stronger odor, potential irritation). **Ropeway aerial views:** The Hakone Ropeway gondola passes directly over the steaming valley — white sulfurous fumes rising from yellow-stained rock, with Lake Ashi and Mt. Fuji (if clear) visible in the distance. The 10-minute ride from Togendai to Owakudani is scenic highlight even if you don't disembark at the valley. For best views, stand near front/rear gondola windows (sides have limited visibility). The ropeway operates 9:00–17:00; weekends see 30–60 min waits at Togendai station (weekdays are faster). **Black egg folklore and reality:** The kuro-tamago turn black due to iron in the hot spring water reacting with sulfur to form iron sulfide coating the shell. The eggs taste identical to regular hard-boiled eggs (the shell doesn't impart flavor). The 'seven years of life' legend is marketing, but the eggs are fresh, cheap (¥500/5 eggs), and serve as unique experience/souvenir. They must be eaten within 2 days (no preservatives). Sold only at Owakudani (not available elsewhere in Hakone), and only in 5-egg packs (no single eggs). Vegetarian visitors can skip; the valley geology is the real attraction.
