Sada Misaki Peninsula

**Lighthouse viewpoint:** Sada Misaki Lighthouse marks the peninsula's westernmost point, perched on cliffs 50 meters above the channel. The lighthouse grounds (free access) provide 180-degree ocean views — on clear days, Kyushu (Oita Prefecture) is visible 40km across the channel. Sunset here is spectacular as the sun descends into the Bungo Channel, silhouetting fishing boats. The lighthouse itself is not open for climbing. **Coastal drive:** The 40km drive from Yawatahama to the lighthouse follows narrow coastal roads hugging cliffs with constant ocean views. The road is winding (average 40 km/h) but well-maintained. Stop at unmarked viewpoint pullouts along the way — many offer better cliff perspectives than official tourist spots. The drive takes 90 minutes one-way; allow 3–4 hours round-trip with stops. **Seafood specialties:** Seki-aji and seki-saba are branded premium fish caught in the Bungo Channel's strong currents (3–5 knots), which force fish to swim constantly, developing firm flesh and rich fat. Restaurants in Yawatahama and Misaki serve these as sashimi (¥2,000–3,000/set). The flavor difference from standard aji/saba is subtle but discernible to seafood enthusiasts — firmer texture, cleaner taste. **Futami Beach:** This small pebble beach on the peninsula's north coast offers calm swimming (July–August) and impressive rock formations including twin sea stacks (the 'Futami' or 'two views').
