Shukkei-en Garden (縮景園, 'shrunken-scenery garden') is a traditional Japanese stroll garden in central Hiroshima, designed in 1620 by Ueda Soko for Asano Nagaakira, feudal lord of Hiroshima Domain. The garden's name reflects its core concept — condensing famous landscapes and natural scenery into a compact space, creating miniature representations of mountains, valleys, forests, and coastlines. The 4-hectare garden centers on a large pond with islands, bridges, and teahouses, surrounded by winding paths that reveal new compositions at each turn.

Shukkei-en's design employs borrowed scenery (shakkei), incorporating distant mountains into the garden's visual composition, and features seasonal highlights: plum blossoms (February), cherry blossoms and azaleas (April), iris (June), lotus (July–August), and autumn foliage (November). The garden suffered severe damage in the 1945 atomic bombing — it was only 1.3km from the hypocenter, and many bomb victims died seeking water in the garden's pond. Post-war restoration preserved Edo-period design elements, and today the garden serves dual roles as a cultural heritage site and a living memorial to resilience. The teahouses (Seiryu-tei and Yuzuki-an) offer matcha tea service overlooking the pond, providing contemplative rest amid Hiroshima's urban bustle and historical weight.

**Garden circuit strategy:** Shukkei-en is designed as a circuit stroll garden — paths loop around the central pond, offering changing perspectives as you walk. Start from the main entrance, proceed counterclockwise around the pond, crossing arched bridges, passing stone lanterns, and pausing at scenic viewpoints. The garden's compact size (easily walkable in 30–40 minutes) makes it ideal for travelers with limited time; however, lingering at teahouses or seasonal flower spots extends the experience pleasurably to 60–90 minutes. Early morning (9:00–10:00) or late afternoon (16:00–17:30) offer the quietest, most atmospheric conditions. **Teahouse experience:** Seiryu-tei teahouse (清流亭) offers informal tea service (not full tea ceremony) — matcha green tea and wagashi traditional sweets for ¥500, served in a tatami room overlooking the pond. Service is self-guided (staff provides tea and sweets, you enjoy at your pace), making it accessible for first-timers without tea ceremony etiquette concerns. The experience is contemplative and quintessentially Japanese — sipping matcha while gazing at the pond's reflection of surrounding maples and stone lanterns. Open garden hours, no reservation required, but capacity is limited (10–15 seats). **Atomic bomb history:** Shukkei-en's proximity to the hypocenter (1.3km) meant it was engulfed by the blast's fireball and subsequent firestorm. Hundreds of victims fled to the garden seeking water and refuge, many dying along the pond's edge. The garden's restoration in the 1950s–1970s included replanting lost trees, rebuilding teahouses, and restoring stone arrangements, but it deliberately preserved the pond and basic layout to honor the victims. Information plaques (Japanese/English) near the entrance explain this history. Visiting Shukkei-en after the Peace Memorial Park provides a contrast — while the park memorializes destruction, the garden embodies recovery and continuity of beauty amid tragedy.
