Nishijin (西陣) is Kyoto's historic textile district where high-end kimono fabric has been woven for 1,200 years. The neighborhood contains 100+ small weaving workshops (織屋, oriya) producing Nishijin-ori (西陣織) — complex brocade fabric requiring weeks to months of hand-weaving for a single kimono. The intricate patterns use gold/silver thread and silk in jacquard weaving technique.

The Nishijin Textile Center (西陣織会館) offers free kimono fashion shows (6 times daily), weaving demonstrations, and hands-on workshops. Walking the neighborhood reveals traditional machiya townhouses converted to weaving studios, with the rhythmic sound of looms echoing from narrow alleys.

Showen (勝鬘, English-speaking master weaver) offers tours by appointment (free, tips appreciated, email reservation). Watching an experienced weaver operate a jacquard loom — hundreds of threads, foot pedals, hand shuttles coordinating in rhythm — conveys the craftsmanship that photos cannot.
