Kyoto Imperial Palace (京都御所) served as the emperor's residence from 794 to 1869 when the capital moved to Tokyo. The palace complex covers 84 hectares and includes the main ceremonial halls, private imperial quarters, gardens, and gates. The architecture exemplifies Japanese palatial style — unpainted cypress wood, white gravel courtyards, and interconnected buildings with raised floors.

Visits are free but require advance reservation. The 50-minute guided tour (Japanese/English audio guide) explains the palace's 1,000-year history, court ceremonies, and architectural features. The palace grounds (Kyoto Gyoen National Garden) surrounding the palace are freely accessible year-round.

**Reservation strategy:** Online reservations open 1st of month for 2 months ahead (same system as Katsura Villa). Unlike Katsura, Kyoto Imperial Palace tours have higher capacity and don't book out as quickly. Same-day standby tickets available at the office (arrive 30 min before tour start) — usually successful except during cherry blossom/autumn peak. **Tour highlights:** The ceremonial Shishin-den Hall (紫宸殿) with its cypress-bark roof is where enthronement ceremonies occurred. The Emperor's private Seiryō-den residence shows tatami rooms, sliding doors with painted scenes, and the sacred mirror chamber. The Otsune-goten (empress's quarters) features elegant painted fusuma (sliding doors) by Kano school artists. Photography allowed in most areas. **Surrounding Gyoen Garden:** The 60-hectare public park surrounding the palace has 5,000+ trees including magnificent weeping cherry trees (late March–early April), plum groves (February–March), and open lawns. The southwest corner's Hamaguri-gomon Gate (蛤御門) bears bullet scars from 1864 conflict. The park offers peaceful walking/picnicking within walking distance of downtown — locals' preferred escape from tourist crowds.
