Hida Furukawa (飛騨古川) is Takayama's smaller, calmer sibling — a canal-lined town of white-walled storehouses, wooden townhouses, and sake breweries that retains the atmosphere Takayama had before mass tourism. The Seto River runs through the town center, populated by hundreds of colorful koi carp that swim beneath willow trees and arched wooden bridges. The atmosphere is profoundly quiet — bicycle bells, flowing water, and birdsong dominate.

Furukawa gained international attention as a filming location for the anime film 'Your Name' (Kimi no Na wa), but even anime pilgrims are few compared to Takayama's crowds. The town's main street (Ichinomachi) features sake breweries open for tasting, traditional craft workshops (woodwork, candle-making), and the Hida Furukawa Festival Museum, which displays the town's elaborate festival floats and explains the famous 'Okoshi-Daiko' drum ceremony held every April.

**Why visit over Takayama:** Furukawa offers the same Hida architecture with 1/20th the tourists. Midweek visits often mean having the canals entirely to yourself. Photographers preferring quiet compositions over famous landmarks will find Furukawa superior. The canal with white storehouses and swimming koi is as photogenic as anything in Takayama's Sanmachi. **Watanabe Sake Brewery:** The town's highlight is Watanabe Shuzo (渡辺酒造店, founded 1870), which offers free brewery tours (Japanese language, daily 9:00–16:00, 20 minutes) showing the traditional fermentation process. Tastings include their Hourai label (floral, slightly sweet) and limited seasonal batches. The owner is friendly and encourages questions despite the language barrier. **Your Name pilgrimage sites:** Fans of the anime can visit Keta Wakamiya Shrine (気多若宮神社, 10-min walk from town, featured in the film's shrine scenes) and the Miyagawa River bridge. The town tourist office (inside Hida Furukawa Station) provides a free anime pilgrimage map. Non-fans can ignore this and enjoy the town for its own merits. **Furukawa Festival (April 19–20):** The Furukawa Matsuri is one of Japan's most intense festivals, featuring the 'Okoshi-Daiko' — hundreds of half-naked men carrying massive drums through town at night in a chaotic, semi-violent procession. Accommodations book a year ahead. If visiting during the festival, expect a completely different (crowded, loud, wild) experience than normal Furukawa tranquility.
