Takayama Jinya (高山陣屋) is the only surviving Edo-period provincial government office (jinya) in Japan, where Tokugawa shogunate officials administered the Hida region from 1692 to 1868. The sprawling complex includes administrative offices, courts, tax rice storehouses, interrogation rooms, and living quarters for the governor, all preserved or reconstructed in original architectural style. The site offers rare insight into how the Tokugawa government controlled remote provinces — through rice taxation, strict record-keeping, and judicial authority.

The main attraction is the tatami-mat courtroom where disputes were settled, complete with original confessional instruments (displayed but not demonstrated). The massive wooden storehouse stored 4,000 koku (720,000 liters) of rice tax collected from Hida farmers. Gardens feature 350-year-old ginkgo trees and koi ponds.
