Karatsu-yaki is one of the five most prestigious Japanese ceramic traditions and the most closely associated with tea ceremony culture. Sen no Rikyu, the 16th-century master who defined the tea aesthetic, reportedly placed Karatsu among the top pottery styles for tea use — the iron-laden clay produces wabi (rustic imperfection) textures that emerge from the kiln unpredictably, making each piece unrepeatable. The town has 40+ active kilns.

**Kiln visit approach:** Unlike Arita (showroom-focused), Karatsu potters welcome visitors to working areas. The phrase 'kama wo misete itadakemasu ka' (may I see the kiln?) opens most doors. The active kilns in Kyomachi-dori are working studios — unglazed pieces, trial pieces, and the clay mixing area are visible on request. **Most accessible piece:** A Karatsu-yaki yunomi (tea cup) from a mid-range kiln (¥3,000–6,000) is the optimal entry purchase — the hand-feel and weight difference from mass-produced ceramics is immediately apparent when used for morning tea.
