Okawachiyama is a narrow valley 10km from Imari City that was deliberately sealed from the outside world in the 17th century — the feudal lord of Nabeshima established his most prized kilns here and forbade potters from leaving (and outsiders from entering) to protect the production secrets of Nabeshima-yaki, the most technically refined Japanese porcelain tradition. Today the valley has 30 kilns, each open as a showroom, surrounded by a gorge and connected by a single stone-paved lane with no through road.

**What distinguishes Nabeshima-yaki:** Whereas Arita porcelain was produced for export, Nabeshima was made exclusively for aristocratic gift exchange — the technical standards are demonstrably higher. Specific features: hand-painted design that extends under the foot ring, perfect regularity of form, and a comb-tooth pattern on the foot ring unique to this tradition. Ask kiln owners to show you the foot ring — they always will. **Affordable entry point:** The 'ko-ware' (small pieces — cups, sake bottles) from production kilns in Okawachiyama start at ¥1,500 and represent genuinely archival craft at accessible prices. For larger purchases, negotiate directly with the kiln owner after examining multiple pieces.
