Kasugayama was Uesugi Kenshin's castle, and it is a mountain rather than a building. Nothing above ground survives except earthworks, but the earthworks are the interest: the whole 180-metre hill was cut into terraces, dry moats, ridge-cutting trenches and enclosures, and the layout is legible on the ground in a way that reconstructed castles never are. It is a nationally designated Historic Site and one of Japan's hundred famous castles.

Kenshin held Echigo from here through the sixteenth century and fought Takeda Shingen at Kawanakajima five times without either side finishing it. The climb to the main enclosure takes in the site of his residence, the wells that made a siege survivable, and a view over the Kubiki plain to the Japan Sea that explains why the hill was chosen.

Nakayashiki and Daizu, Joetsu City. By car from Takada Station, or bus to Kasugayama-shita and walk. Free, accessible at all hours. Two free car parks: about 30 spaces at Kasugayama Shrine, about 10 at the Otedo approach. From the shrine car park the main enclosure is roughly 20 to 30 minutes uphill; the Otedo route from the base is longer and shows more of the defensive works. The Kasugayama Monogatari-kan interpretation centre takes about 30 minutes, is closed Mondays and closed December to February, with about 12 free spaces.

**Take the Otedo route up if you can.** The short route from the shrine car park delivers the view; the longer route from the base passes the guardhouse sites and the ridge cuts, which is the part that shows how the hill was engineered. **It is a hill walk, not a castle visit.** Unpaved, steep in sections, muddy after rain. Trainers are the minimum and the whole circuit takes 90 minutes to two hours. **Winter effectively closes it.** Joetsu takes heavy snow from December to March, the interpretation centre shuts, and the tracks are unusable. April to November is the season. **The view is the argument.** From the main enclosure you can see the whole Kubiki plain and the sea. Kenshin's control of Echigo rested on watching that ground, and standing there makes the map redundant. **Rinsenji temple is at the foot.** Kenshin was schooled there as a boy and it holds material connected to him — a short detour from the Otedo car park.
