The original Saga Castle (1608) was demolished in the 1870s; the current History Museum occupies the restored Great Hall (hommaru gotenke) using all-traditional construction — Japanese cypress, hand-forged iron fittings, and tatami floors extending 2,600 square meters through interconnected reception rooms. The museum's collection focuses on the Meiji Restoration, in which Saga-han played a disproportionate role: five founding fathers of modern Japan came from this prefecture, including the creators of the Japanese Navy, postal system, and railway network.

**The Great Hall at dusk:** The museum closes at 18:00 but the outer castle grounds remain open. At dusk, the Great Hall illumination begins and the stone moat reflects the building — one of Saga's finest photographic compositions, utterly unknown to tourists. **Meiji figure connections:** The museum contains personal possessions of Okuma Shigenobu (founder of Waseda University) and Eto Shimpei (father of the Japanese justice system) — both Saga natives. The personal letters on display, combined with explanatory panels, make the Meiji transformation feel individual rather than abstract.
