Ryuga Cave (龍河洞) is one of Japan's three great limestone caves, a 4-kilometer underground system carved over 175 million years by the Yamadarui River as it dissolved its way through the Shikoku limestone karst. The public walking route covers 1km and takes you through chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone curtains, and underground pools lit by colored spotlights. The highlight is the 'Crystal Palace' chamber, where calcite formations hang like frozen chandeliers.

The cave is also an archaeological site — Yayoi-period pottery (2,000+ years old) was discovered deep inside, calcified into the cave floor by dripping limestone, creating eerie half-stone, half-ceramic artifacts. Ryuga Cave is less polished and more adventurous than famous caves like Akiyoshido — lighting is minimal in places, paths are narrow, and the sense of being deep underground is visceral.

Daily 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM (last entry 4:30 PM). Adventure Course tours run 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM with scheduled departure times. Ryugado Museum open same hours as cave.

Fermé: Open daily year-round. No regular closure days. The cave interior is 13–15°C year-round regardless of surface conditions.

Standard cave entry ¥1,200 adults (includes Ryugado Museum). Adventure Course ¥3,000 additional (reservation required 3+ days ahead). Children ¥600 for standard entry.

Year-round (cave maintains constant 13–15°C temperature). Spring and autumn are most comfortable for the outdoor approach. Summer weekdays are good to avoid August school-group crowds.

Ryuga Cave is 30 minutes by bus from Tosayamada Station (JR Dosan Line, 40 min from Kochi). Cave entrance is a 5-min walk from the bus stop. Open daily 8:30–17:00 (last entry 16:30). Entry: ¥1,200 adults. Adventure course (with helmet/headlamp): ¥3,000, reservation required.

**Standard vs. Adventure Course:** The standard 1km route is paved and lit, suitable for all ages (60 min). The 'Adventure Course' is a 90-minute guided tour through narrow, unlit passages requiring crawling, climbing, and squeezing through tight gaps. You wear a helmet and headlamp. It is muddy, physical, and thrilling. Minimum age 12. Book online 3+ days ahead. **What to see:** The 'Tengu no Hoko' (Tengu's Spear) stalactite in the main chamber is 11 meters long — one of Japan's largest. The 'Kame-ishi' (Turtle Rock) is a boulder perfectly balanced on a pedestal, formed by differential erosion. And the Yayoi pottery embedded in flowstone is visible in a glass case near the exit. **Photography:** Tripod allowed on the standard course but not the adventure course. The cave is dim — bring a fast lens (f/2.8 or wider). Flash is permitted but washes out the formations; long exposure is better. Best light is near the entrance chambers. **Temperature:** The cave is 13–15°C year-round. Bring a light jacket even in summer. Humidity is near 100%, so cameras will fog when you exit in summer. **Combine with:** The Ryugado Museum (龍河洞博物館) at the entrance has exhibits on cave geology and the Yayoi artifacts. Entry included with cave ticket. Also nearby: Noichi Zoo (30 min by bus), specializing in highland animals from around the world. **Best season:** Year-round, but spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November) have the most comfortable temperatures above ground. Avoid weekends in August (crowded with school groups).
