Wakura Onsen (和倉温泉) is a luxury hot spring resort town on Nanao Bay's western shore, established over 1,200 years ago when a fisherman noticed an injured crane bathing in seawater that healed its wounds. The onsen's mineral-rich waters (sodium chloride springs at 80–90°C at the source) are drawn from beneath Nanao Bay's seabed, creating seaside rotenburo (outdoor baths) where bathers soak while gazing at the bay, distant mountains, and fishing boats. The water's high salt content provides exceptional buoyancy and skin benefits.

Wakura is home to Kagaya (加賀屋), repeatedly ranked Japan's #1 ryokan for over 30 consecutive years, offering legendary hospitality (omotenashi, おもてなし) with kaiseki cuisine, traditional performances, and immaculate service. The town's waterfront promenade features free foot baths overlooking the bay, a small hot spring bath park (湯っ足りパーク, Yuttari Park) with free foot baths and drinking fountain dispensing hot spring water (claimed to aid digestion), and seafood restaurants serving Nanao Bay's oysters and fish. Wakura represents the pinnacle of Japanese luxury onsen culture — refined ryokan hospitality, therapeutic bathing, kaiseki dining, and scenic beauty integrated into a seamless experience.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Kagaya ryokan experience:** Kagaya sets the Japanese hospitality standard — upon arrival, staff greet you by name, guide you to your room, and serve tea while explaining the facilities. Kaiseki dinners (served in private dining rooms or in-room) feature 12+ courses showcasing Noto Peninsula ingredients: Nanao Bay oysters, Noto beef, seasonal fish, local vegetables, and gold-leaf garnishes. The ryokan houses multiple baths (gender-segregated large baths, private family baths, rooftop rotenburo with bay views), a theater with nightly traditional performances (taiko drumming, shamisen), and a champagne bar. Service is meticulous — staff remember your preferences, prepare your futon while you bathe, and provide wake-up tea. Booking requires 2–3 months advance for peak seasons. This is a once-in-a-lifetime splurge (¥40,000–80,000 per person), but defines Japanese luxury hospitality at its zenith. **Budget Wakura alternatives:** Tadaya (多田屋, ¥18,000–30,000 per person) offers excellent quality at lower prices — seaside rotenburo, kaiseki dinners, and bay-view rooms without Kagaya's ultra-premium service level. Noto Ichirin (能登一輪, ¥20,000–35,000) is a smaller ryokan (20 rooms) with more intimate atmosphere. For day-trip bathing, Noroshi (のろし, ¥1,500 day-use bathing, 11:00–15:00, reservation required) provides access to seaside rotenburo without overnight stay. Combine day bathing with lunch at waterfront restaurants (kaiseki lunch ¥3,000–5,000) for a partial Wakura experience at 1/10th the cost. **Yuttari Park and waterfront walk:** The free foot bath park (Yuttari Park) has multiple basins at different temperatures (40–43°C) where you soak your feet while watching fishing boats return to Nanao Port. A drinking fountain dispenses 60°C hot spring water — locals drink it for digestive benefits (let it cool to drinkable temperature, tastes salty-metallic). The waterfront promenade (1.5km) connects the park to Nanao Bay's scenic areas with benches and sunset views. This free activity complements the expensive ryokan stay, offering relaxed seaside atmosphere. Evening (17:00–19:00) is best for foot baths as the setting sun illuminates the bay and the sodium-rich water retains heat longer after sunset.
