Dotonbori — Neon Canal & Street Food Paradise

Dotonbori (道頓堀) is Osaka's most iconic entertainment district — a neon-lit canal lined with restaurants, bars, and massive 3D signage including the famous Glico Running Man and moving crab billboard. The district epitomizes Osaka's 'kuidaore' (食い倒れ, 'eat until you drop') culture, with takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu, and ramen shops competing for attention through theatrical presentation and aggressive touting.

The canal dates to 1612 when merchant Yasui Doton dredged it for commerce. Today, the waterway reflects the district's neon chaos — photographing the Glico sign's reflection in the canal at night is Osaka's most iconic shot. The energy peaks after dark (19:00–23:00) when crowds, lights, and street performers create carnival atmosphere.
