福岡作為最接近亞洲大陸的日本大城,其文化認同深受此地緣影響,而1999年開館的亞洲美術館正是此一縮影——常設收藏涵蓋22個亞洲國家的近現代與傳統藝術中每一個重要傳統。就多數評價而言,這是全球單一美術館中最完整的一批亞洲近代藝術收藏。
收藏以20世紀以降的作品為重心:中國當代水墨與印尼蠟染並陳、越南漆藝與巴基斯坦卡車彩繪相鄰。「亞洲並非鐵板一塊」這一策展命題,由展品驚人的多樣性所支撐。美術館位於一座購物中心的7、8樓,也因此常被福岡在地人忽略。
