門司曾是明治時代日本最重要的國際貿易港之一——貨物從亞洲大陸進入日本的第一站。1889至1920年的繁榮,留下一片密集的西式商業建築群:紅磚海關、文藝復興復興式的銀行、洛可可風格的舊海事辦公樓。當港口的地位讓給北九州更現代的設施後,門司便凝結在了時光裡。
如今這一帶(正式名稱「門司港懷舊區」)在500公尺半徑內保存了17棟登錄有案的西式建築,是日本明治商業建築最密集的範例之一。入夜後的海濱,建築映著關門海峽點起燈火,對岸下關的燈光遙遙在望,出乎意料地浪漫。
