Togakushi Shrine (戸隠神社) is a complex of five Shinto shrines scattered across the forested slopes of Mount Togakushi, connected by ancient pilgrimage trails through towering cedar forests. The shrines date back over 2,000 years and are dedicated to deities associated with the Amano-Iwato myth — the story of the sun goddess Amaterasu hiding in a cave, plunging the world into darkness until other deities lured her out.

The most famous shrine is Okusha (奥社, 'Inner Shrine'), reached via a 2km path lined with 400-year-old cryptomeria cedars — one of Japan's most atmospheric forest approaches. The cedar avenue creates a cathedral-like corridor, with filtered sunlight and moss-covered ground. Togakushi is also known for soba noodles (Togakushi soba is considered among Japan's top three soba-producing regions) and togakushi-ryu ninja history (the area was a ninja training ground).

Togakushi, a bus from Nagano Station to Togakushi Chusha (middle shrine). Five shrines: Hokosha, Chusha (middle), Okusha (inner), Kuzuryusha, and Hinomikosha. Free entry to all shrines. Hiking between shrines: 3–5 hours full circuit. Visit duration: half-day minimum, full day recommended.

**Okusha cedar approach:** This 2km path is Japan's most celebrated shrine approach. The final 300m is lined with centuries-old cryptomeria (some over 600 years old, 50m tall). Morning (8:00–9:00) offers best light filtering through the canopy and minimal crowds. The path can be icy/snowy November–April; traction devices recommended in winter. **Five shrine circuit:** Serious hikers can walk the full pilgrimage route connecting all five shrines (12km, 5 hours, moderate difficulty). The route passes through forest, streams, and offers mountain views. Start at Hokosha (宝光社, lowest shrine), ascend to Chusha (中社, largest shrine with main torii gate), continue to Okusha (highest shrine), then descend to Kuzuryusha (九頭龍社, beside a sacred pond). Finish at Hinomikosha (火之御子社). **Togakushi soba:** Togakushi soba is served in bundles (bocchi-mori, 小法師盛り, literally 'little monk portions') arranged in bamboo baskets. Uzuraya (うずら家, near Chusha, ¥1,200–1,800) is the most famous shop — handmade 100% buckwheat soba with mountain vegetable tempura. Expect 30–60 minute waits on weekends. **Best seasons:** Autumn (October, peak foliage along cedar path) is most popular but crowded. Spring (May, fresh green, wildflowers) and early summer (June, before rainy season) offer quieter conditions. Winter (January–February, snow-covered path, shrine roofs under snow) is magical but requires winter hiking gear.
