宇治產出日本最頂級的綠茶已逾800年，宇治抹茶更被視為茶道的黃金標準。此地的氣候（晨霧、河谷）與土壤造就了絕佳的生長條件。宇治的茶鋪與咖啡館以各種形式供應抹茶：傳統茶道、抹茶聖代、抹茶蕎麥麵、霜淇淋。
最著名的茶屋是創業於1160年的通圓茶屋——很可能是全世界持續營業最久的茶鋪。這個家族在宇治橋畔的同一地點，已為24代人奉茶。
