Yuda Onsen (湯田温泉) is Yamaguchi City's hot spring district, where 2,000 tons of alkaline thermal water (pH 9.1, 72°C at source) flow daily from springs discovered 800 years ago by an injured white fox. The high-alkaline water (among Japan's most alkaline) creates a slippery, silky sensation on skin, earning the nickname 'bijin no yu' (beauty water) for its cosmetic benefits. The onsen town features 20+ ryokan, public bathhouses, footbaths, and an Ashi-yu (足湯, free public foot bath) in the form of a giant fox statue.

Yuda Onsen balances traditional and modern — historic wooden ryokan like Matsudaya Hotel (190 years old) coexist with contemporary spa hotels, while the district's main street has restaurants, izakaya, and bars creating evening liveliness uncommon in typical quiet onsen towns. The onsen's proximity to Yamaguchi Station, a short tram ride away, makes it an accessible base for exploring Yamaguchi City's temples (Rurikoji, Sesshu Garden) while enjoying genuine hot spring culture. The area also honors its fox legend with fox statues, shrines, and seasonal festivals, adding whimsical mythology to the bathing experience.

The white-fox origin story, however fanciful, follows a pattern common to many of Japan's older onsen towns, where a hot spring's discovery is credited to an injured animal observed bathing and healing itself, a folk explanation that likely reflects genuine early observation of wildlife using naturally warm water rather than pure invention. What sets Yuda apart practically from many similarly storied springs is the sheer alkalinity and volume of its water, properties that made it valuable enough to develop into Yamaguchi City's primary hot spring district rather than remaining a minor bathing spot on the edge of town. Because Yamaguchi City itself was historically an important regional center, home to temples and gardens modeled in part on Kyoto during periods when local lords cultivated cultural ties to the old capital, Yuda Onsen developed as an extension of that broader cultural identity rather than in isolation — a bathing district serving a city that already had its own claim to refinement, rather than a purely rural retreat that tourism later discovered.

**Day-visit bathing:** If not staying overnight, the Yudasen Ryokan Cooperative operates Onsen Kannon public bath (温泉観音, ¥500, 6:00–23:00) offering indoor and outdoor baths with authentic high-alkaline water. The alkaline content (pH 9.1) creates noticeably silky water texture — your skin feels smooth and almost soapy. Locals claim regular bathing improves skin condition over time (the 'beauty water' reputation). Soak 15–20 min, exit to cool, repeat. **Fox legend and footbaths:** Legend says an injured white fox discovered the springs by bathing in them and healing its wounds — hence Yuda Onsen's fox mascot and statues. The main footbath (あし湯, free, 8:00–22:00) is built into a 2-meter-long fox statue on the central street. Sit, soak your feet in 40°C spring water, and watch the onsen town's evening bustle. It's social and relaxing, popular with locals chatting after work. **Ryokan overnight experience:** For immersive onsen culture, stay at a traditional ryokan: Matsudaya Hotel (松田屋ホテル, ¥18,000–35,000/night, 190-year history, Meiji-era garden, kaiseki dinner) or Nishimuraya (西村屋, ¥15,000–25,000, mid-range, large baths). Overnight allows multiple baths (evening, late-night, morning) and kaiseki dinner using local Yamaguchi ingredients (fugu in winter, tai year-round). The ryokan experience — bathing, yukata-wearing, tatami rooms — is core Japanese travel, and Yuda offers it at lower cost than famous onsen towns. **Combine with Yamaguchi City sites:** Yuda Onsen's central location makes it ideal base for visiting Rurikoji Temple, Sesshu Garden, and Xavier Memorial Church. Itinerary: morning temple visits → afternoon return to Yuda → late afternoon bath (16:00) → dinner at local izakaya → evening bath (21:00). This rhythm mirrors Japanese onsen vacation culture.
