Castillo de Kochi

**What makes it special:** Kochi Castle survived centuries of typhoons, earthquakes, and war. The fact that both the tenshu and the palace are original (not reconstructed) makes it architecturally invaluable. The tenshu's construction uses traditional joinery — no nails, just interlocking wood beams. **Inside the tenshu:** The ground floor displays samurai armor and maps. The second floor has defensive features: concealed weapon racks, observation slits in the walls, and a stone-drop chute for repelling attackers. The top floor is the observation deck — 360° views. On clear days, you can see the ocean. **Honmaru Palace:** This is the real treasure. The palace has 15 rooms, including the lord's living quarters, reception halls, and the 'Jodan-no-Ma' (raised dais room) where the Yamauchi lord sat above visiting samurai. The painted sliding doors (fusuma) depict pine trees, cranes, and tigers — all symbols of power and longevity. **Night visits:** During cherry blossom season (late March–early April) and autumn foliage (November), the castle is illuminated until 21:00. The night view from the castle grounds is stunning. Entry to the tenshu is daytime only, but the grounds stay open. **Combine with Sunday Market:** If visiting on Sunday, do the Nichiyoichi Sunday Market first (7:00–10:00), then walk to the castle when it opens at 9:00. The market starts at the castle's base, so the transition is seamless. **Museum nearby:** The Kochi Castle Museum of History (5-min walk) covers the Yamauchi clan and Tosa domain history. It is well-curated but optional if time is limited. Combined ticket with castle: ¥900.
