The Kyoto International Manga Museum (京都国際マンガミュージアム) occupies a renovated elementary school building and houses 300,000 manga volumes including rare editions and international comics. The museum's 'Wall of Manga' (manga no kabe) displays 50,000 volumes on 200-meter-long shelves that visitors can freely read. The open reading policy encourages spending hours on the lawn reading manga — a public library approach rare in museums.

Exhibitions rotate, showcasing manga history, international manga, specific artists, and original artwork. The museum also offers manga-drawing workshops and manga artist demonstrations.

**Reading strategy:** The Wall of Manga organizes 50,000 volumes by genre and publication year (1970s–2020s). Titles with English translations are marked. Classic series like Astro Boy, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon are available in original Japanese and various translations. The museum permits all-day reading — visitors commonly spend 3–5 hours reading on the lawn or in reading rooms. Bring ¥1,000 coins for drink vending machines. **Temporary exhibitions:** Rotating exhibitions (4–6 times yearly) feature specific manga artists, genres, or themes. Past exhibitions covered Osamu Tezuka, shojo manga history, international manga influence. Exhibition-specific original artwork and manuscripts on display — rare access to manga production process. Check museum website for current exhibition before visiting; some are extraordinary, others niche. **Manga culture context:** Kyoto is headquarters of Nintendo and multiple manga publishers. The museum reflects Japan's embrace of manga as legitimate cultural form worth preserving and studying — contrast with Western comics' historically lower cultural status. The museum treats manga as literature, displaying original manuscripts alongside historical archives. For manga fans, this is pilgrimage site; for skeptics, it demonstrates manga's cultural significance in Japan.
