Lake Saiko, the fourth-largest of the Fuji Five Lakes, remains the quietest and least developed — no lakeshore hotels, minimal tourist infrastructure, and dense forest surrounding three-quarters of the shoreline. The lake sits at 900m elevation on the western side of Mt. Fuji, offering different viewing angles than the more famous Kawaguchiko. The area is known for the Saiko Bat Cave (西湖コウモリ穴), a 350-meter lava tube cave that houses colonies of Japanese long-eared bats, and the Aokigahara Forest which spreads from the southern shore.

The lake's western shore features the Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba, a reconstructed traditional village with 20 thatched-roof kayabuki houses that survived a typhoon in 1966. The houses now operate as craft workshops (pottery, weaving, glassblowing) and small museums displaying rural Yamanashi life. In winter, the village with snow-covered thatched roofs and Mt. Fuji beyond creates a scene from historical Japan.

Guía privilegiada

Premium
**Bat Cave exploration:** The cave requires a helmet (provided) and flashlight (rent ¥200 or bring your own). The lava tube extends 350 meters with heights ranging from 2 meters to crawl-only sections. The bat colonies (mostly Japanese long-eared bats) roost in crevices near the entrance — viewing is best April–October when bats are active. The cave temperature remains 5–10°C year-round — wear a jacket even in summer. **Iyashi no Sato Nenba village:** The reconstructed village provides rare access to traditional kayabuki architecture. Several houses offer hands-on craft experiences: pottery wheel (¥1,500, 30 minutes), indigo dyeing (¥1,000), and glass bead making (¥800). The 'Old Japanese House Museum' displays farming tools, silk-weaving looms, and cooking hearths. The village is photogenic in all seasons — cherry blossoms (April), fresh green (May), autumn foliage (November), and especially snow (January–February). **Lake activities:** Saiko is Yamanashi's best lake for kayaking and canoeing due to low boat traffic and calm water. Rental facilities on the northern shore offer kayaks (¥2,000/hour) and Canadian canoes (¥3,000/hour). Paddling to the center of the lake provides unobstructed 360° views — Mt. Fuji to the east, Aokigahara Forest to the south, and the Misaka Mountains to the north. Morning calm (7:00–9:00) offers the best paddling conditions. **Photography:** The Panorama Observatory on the northern shore provides elevated views of the entire lake with Mt. Fuji beyond. The viewpoint includes a boardwalk extending into the forest for foreground framing. Autumn (late October) colors the forest in red and gold, creating layered compositions. Winter mornings occasionally produce mist rising from the lake surface (best at freezing temperatures, January–February).
