Sanriku Coast

The Sanriku Coast is best explored by car, allowing stops at multiple scenic points, fishing villages, and memorials. Kitayamazaki cliffs are the most dramatic section — vertical rock walls rising 200m directly from the ocean, with walking trails along the cliff edge and boat tours (seasonal) exploring the coast from sea level. The cliffs are formed from volcanic rock layers dating to 50 million years ago. Jodogahama Beach (Miyako) is the most accessible beautiful spot — white pebble beach, blue water, pine-covered rocks. Kamaishi includes the tsunami memorial and the massive seawall constructed post-2011. Ofunato has the Miracle Lone Pine Tree (tsunami survivor). The coast's seafood is exceptional — sea urchin season runs June–August, oysters are year-round, wakame seaweed is harvested March–May. Fishing villages operate morning markets selling fresh catch. The ria coast geography created natural harbors supporting fishing culture for centuries. The 2011 tsunami reached heights over 30m in some bays, devastating villages. Reconstruction focused on elevated housing, seawalls, and memorial sites that educate visitors about tsunami risk. The region's recovery is ongoing but villages have rebuilt and tourism is welcomed. Visit tsunami learning centers in Kamaishi and Rikuzentakata for context. The coast combines natural beauty with sobering history, making it a meaningful travel experience. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer best weather. Summer is warmer but can be foggy. Winter is harsh with limited services.
