Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden is home to over 1,000 wild Japanese macaques (snow monkeys) that descend from Mt. Takasaki daily for feeding at a designated plaza. The monkeys are wild, not caged — they live in natural troops in the mountain forest and visit the feeding area voluntarily. Visitors watch from an observation deck as staff scatter wheat and sweet potatoes while the troop hierarchy plays out in real-time.

The viewing area is separated by a shallow moat, but monkeys occasionally jump across — staff are vigilant but interactions happen.

**Troop dynamics:** Two main troops (Group A and Group B) alternate visiting the feeding area, rarely meeting due to territorial conflicts. Ask staff which troop is present — Group A has ~700 members and includes more young macaques. Feeding time lasts 30–40 minutes, with alpha males eating first while low-ranking members wait. **Photography:** Telephoto lens (200mm+) recommended for close-ups from the deck. The monkeys are accustomed to cameras but don't make eye contact (interpreted as aggression). Morning light (10:00 feeding) is better for photography than afternoon. **Aquarium combo:** The adjacent Umitamago Aquarium is walking distance — combo tickets (¥2,200) cover both attractions.
