Tsuru no Maihashiwooden bridgeMt. IwakiTsurutareflection

Three timber arches in a row across a reservoir, three hundred metres end to end, built in 1994 from three thousand logs and three thousand planks of Aomori hiba cypress — the longest wooden triple-arch bridge in Japan. The reservoir it crosses is called Tsugaru Fujimi-ko, the lake with a view of the Tsugaru Fuji, and on a still morning Mt. Iwaki stands behind the bridge and repeats itself upside down in the water.

That combination — three dark timber arches, a symmetrical volcano, and both of them doubled in still water — is the reason the bridge became briefly famous nationally after appearing in an advertisement. It remains almost unvisited by anyone from outside the prefecture. There is a park at one end and a crane sanctuary at the other, free to enter, with actual red-crowned cranes in it.

Guía privilegiada

**Early morning for the reflection.** The mirror image of Mt. Iwaki needs still water, which means before the wind gets up. By mid-morning in most seasons it is gone. **Winter is the strongest version.** Snow on Iwaki behind dark timber arches, with the lake frozen or half-frozen. Access needs winter tyres but the crowd is zero. **Parking is metered after thirty minutes.** Free for the first half hour, then charged. Crossing and photographing takes longer than that. **The cranes are real and free.** The Tancho Crane Nature Park at one end keeps red-crowned cranes, is free, and closes at four. **Combine with Takayama Inari.** The curving torii shrine is about forty minutes away and the two make a strong half-day in the western Tsugaru plain, which almost no itinerary covers.
