Amanohashidate (天橋立, 'Bridge to Heaven') is a 3.6km pine-covered sandbar stretching across Miyazu Bay, ranked as one of Japan's Three Scenic Views (日本三景). The sandbar contains 8,000 pine trees and divides the bay into inner and outer sections. The classic viewing method is matanozoki (股のぞき, 'looking between your legs') — bending over and viewing upside-down makes the sandbar appear to float in the sky.

The sandbar formed naturally over thousands of years from sediment deposits, creating a narrow land bridge walkable or bikeable end-to-end. The pine forest provides shade and scenic coastal walking.

Insider Guide

**Matanozoki viewpoint:** Both north (Amanohashidate View Land) and south (Kasamatsu Park) viewpoints offer matanozoki stands — metal benches designed for upside-down viewing. The south Kasamatsu view is considered superior (panoramic bay + mountains), accessed by cable car or chair lift (660 yen round-trip, a short ride). The upside-down perspective genuinely transforms the scene — the sandbar appears to float, justifying the gimmick. **Cycling the sandbar:** Rent bicycles at Amanohashidate Station (¥400/2 hours) to cycle the full 3.6km sandbar. The path runs through pine forest with ocean views on both sides. Midway there's a small shrine (Hashidate Shrine) and rest area. The ride takes 30–40 minutes one-way including photo stops. Early morning (8:00–9:00) sees almost no one — magical solitude. **Overnight stay:** Amanohashidate has ryokan and hotels with onsen offering bay views. Staying overnight allows sunrise over the sandbar (6:00–7:00, seasonal) and evening illuminated pine trees. The Monjusou Shorotei ryokan (文珠荘松露亭) has kaiseki dinner + breakfast + private onsen (¥25,000/person) with direct sandbar views from rooms — worth considering for romantic Kyoto escape.
