金閣寺（「金色樓閣之寺」）是一座覆滿純金箔的三層禪宗寺院，完美倒映在環繞它的鏡湖池上。原為將軍足利義滿於1397年所建的隱居別邸，其歿後改為禪寺。現存建築為1955年重建——原建築於1950年遭一名僧人縱火燒毀。
每一層代表不同的建築樣式：一層為寢殿造（貴族宮殿）、二層為武家造、三層為禪寺樣式。金色樓閣映於池面，構成京都最常被拍攝的一幅畫面。
