奧之院是一條2公里長的參道,穿越20萬座長滿青苔的墓塚與紀念碑,兩旁是聳立的500年古杉,通往相傳真言宗開祖弘法大師肉身入定的靈廟。這裡是日本規模最大、最神聖的墓地——歷代大名、武士、僧侶乃至現代企業家,都希望死後能長眠於此,與弘法大師相伴。
夜間參拜(日落後,19:00起)將墓地化為神秘境界——1萬座石燈籠與獻燈點亮參道,在古老墓塚上投下搖曳的光影,杉林間飄散著陣陣香煙。步道寬闊、鋪面平整、安全無虞,但氛圍極為靈性莊嚴——寂靜中只有腳步聲、遠處燈籠堂傳來的誦經聲,以及風吹過樹梢的聲音。燈籠堂本身供奉著千百年來朝聖者奉獻的1萬座長明燈,透過格子門扉透出金黃光暈。僧侶會在午夜舉行送飯儀式——每日仍為弘法大師的靈廟送去白飯,彷彿他依然在世,反映著他仍在入定、並非死去的信仰。墓地裡還有許多耐人尋味的歷史墓塚(包括白蟻供養塔、水子供養地藏,以及企業創辦人的紀念碑),但夜間參拜的力量在於那股氛圍——直面無常,以及跨越世紀仍延續不絕的靈性修行。
