Togetsukyo Bridge

**Photography angles:** The classic postcard view is from the south bank looking north toward the bridge with mountains behind. Morning (8:00–10:00) provides soft lighting and fewer tourists on the bridge. The bridge itself is underwhelming to walk across (just a bridge), but the view to the bridge is iconic. For different perspective, walk upstream along the river's east bank — lesser-known vantage point with willow trees framing the bridge. **River cormorant fishing:** Summer evenings (July–September), traditional ukai (鵜飼, cormorant fishing) demonstrations occur on the river near the bridge. Fishermen use trained cormorants on leashes to catch ayu (sweetfish). Viewing boats (¥2,000/person, reserve through hotels or tourism office) depart at dusk (18:30–19:30) for 1-hour experience. Touristy but traditional method dating to 1000+ years. **Seasonal timing:** Peak seasons transform Arashiyama dramatically. Spring cherry blossoms (late March–early April) see massive crowds — arrive before 8:00am or visit weekdays. Autumn foliage (mid-November) is equally crowded but worth it for crimson mountain backdrop. Summer (July–August) is hot and humid with fewer tourists — better for experiencing the bridge without crowds, though less scenic.
