歌舞伎町是東京最大的娛樂與紅燈區,一座霓虹浸染的窄巷迷宮,塞滿逾3000家酒吧、夜店、KTV、居酒屋、男公關/女公關店與宵夜餐廳。整個街區靠東京狂熱的夜間能量運轉——下班喝酒的上班族、唱KTV到天亮的團體,以及在10層樓高的直立霓虹招牌間迷路的遊客。儘管名聲在外,這裡其實安全、警力密集,作為觀察東京夜生活文化之地十分迷人。
最有氛圍的是黃金街——六條窄巷裡藏著200多家小酒吧,每家只坐得下5–8人。這些是昭和年代的遺跡——1950–60年代的木造建築,原封不動、親密而各具個性。每家酒吧都有自己的主題(爵士、龐克、文學、電影)與熟客。有些歡迎遊客,有些則收「桌費」勸退臨時客。
