明治神宮是供奉明治天皇與昭憲皇太后的神社,坐落於東京市中心70公頃的森林聖域之中。神社1920年落成,二戰中焚毀,1958年重建。通往神社的參道是一段穿過參天樹木的10分鐘步行(7萬株來自日本各地、於神社初建時捐贈栽植的樹),完成從都市東京到神聖森林的過渡。
神社本殿以檜木與銅瓦、傳統流造樣式建成。入口的巨大鳥居——由1500年樹齡的檜木製成——是日本最大的鳥居之一。明治神宮是東京舉行傳統神道婚禮的首選(週末有20–30場儀式),遊客常能見到身穿白無垢的新娘遊行隊伍。
