Kifune Shrine (貴船神社) sits in a forested mountain valley north of Kyoto, famous for its summer river dining platforms (川床, kawadoko) and vermillion lantern-lined stone stairway. The shrine is dedicated to water deity and is considered one of Kyoto's most powerful spiritual sites — particularly for matchmaking, as shrine legend tells of a woman who prayed here to win her love.

The shrine's summer platforms extend over Kibune River, where restaurants serve kaiseki cuisine while diners sit directly above flowing water — natural air conditioning providing 5–10°C temperature drop from Kyoto city. The riverside setting with forest canopy creates magical atmosphere.

180 Kurama Kibune-cho, Sakyo Ward. A bus from Demachiyanagi Station + a short walk, or Eizan Railway to Kibuneguchi + 30-min uphill walk. Shrine free entry. River dining restaurants: ¥5,000–15,000/person (lunch), ¥10,000–25,000 (dinner), reservations required. Season: May–September.

**Kawadoko dining reservation:** River platform restaurants book 1–2 months ahead for July–August weekends. Lunch is significantly cheaper than dinner with same views and similar menu quality. **Flowing somen experience:** Hirobun's specialty is nagashi somen (流しそうめん) — thin wheat noodles flowing down bamboo channels in cold water, caught with chopsticks and dipped in tsuyu broth. The setup is elaborate (half-split bamboo creates natural channel) and fun. Best for lunch (¥1,300, no reservation needed); arrive before 12:00 to avoid waits. Kaiseki platforms (reservations required) are separate from somen area. **Shrine illumination:** Late July–mid August evenings (17:00–20:30), the lantern stairway is illuminated for Tanabata festival (七夕, Star Festival). The 300+ red lanterns create enchanted atmosphere. Combine evening shrine visit with river dining dinner (restaurants open for dinner service during illumination period). The shrine's water fortune-telling (水占みくじ, mizuura mikuji, ¥200) is popular — place paper fortune in sacred spring; text appears revealing fortune.
